Mental Health-ish

Schizophrenia & Recovery

Imperfect Mellow Podcast Season 2 Episode 5

According to the American Psychological Association, Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness characterized by incoherent or illogical thoughts, bizarre behavior and speech, and delusions or hallucinations, such as hearing voices. This week I am joined by Dale Walsh,  as he shares his unique “inside-out” perspective of schizophrenia, having experienced both sides of the illness from deep psychosis to recovered freedom. In this episode, we help debunk many myths about Schizophrenia.

Following a thirteen-week hospitalization after being “extracted” from Dartmouth College, Dale was in a private psychiatric program where he was hospitalized nine times over five years. He then moved into his own unsupervised apartment and returned to college at Fairleigh Dickinson University, from where he graduated magna cum laude in English Literature. Diagnosed 45 years ago, Dale has been episode-free for the past 29. His mental health journey has evolved from total psychosis to a miraculous recovery. He has lived independently for forty years.
